Instructions ›

* Fill in the missing words into the blank fields
Now,  as  you  know  already,  there  will  be  a  midterm  exam  next  week.  The  exam  will  be  an  open-book,  open-note,  and  open-internet  resource  exam.  But  you  can't  use  a  classmate  or  me  during  the  exam.  Many  of  the  questions  on  this  exam  don't  have    answers.  I  wish  to    your  critical  thinking  ability  and  your  ability  to  combine  ideas.  A  poorly  organized  answer  will  not  get  the  same  grades  as  a    answer.  Here  are  some  good  ways  to  study  for  the  exam.  First  of  all,  it  would  be  better  for  you  to  organize  and  review  your  lecture  notes.  That  means  you  many  need  to  compile  notes  and  lab  test    if  you  have  not  done  that  already.  I  strongly  suggest  that  you  write  trial    before  the  exam.  I  think  it  will  make  you  feel  more  comfortable.  Just  stop  by  my  office.

Correct answer: definitive

Explanation: On the recording you hear "don't have definitive answers". The word after "have" is for being final, it ends in ive.

Meaning: "definitive" means final or exact.

Wrong options:

  • definitve: It leaves out the "i". The right spelling is "definitive". Every letter must be correct to get the mark.
  • definite: "definite" is a close word, but it ends in "e". The speaker says "definitive", which ends in "ive".
Correct answer: assess

Explanation: Listen again to "I wish to assess your critical thinking ability". You need an action word that means judge or test.

Meaning: "assess" means to judge or test.

Wrong options:

  • asses: It leaves out the "s". Write "assess". Only the exact spelling gets the mark.
  • access: "Access" means to get into something, not to judge or test.
Correct answer: well-organized

Explanation: Here you hear "a well-organized answer". You need a describing word made of two words joined together.

Meaning: "well-organized" means in good order and clearly arranged.

Wrong options:

  • well organized: This has no hyphen, but the text uses the joined form here.
Correct answer: results

Explanation: The speaker says "compile notes and lab test results". It comes after "lab test", so you need a thing word and more than one.

Meaning: "results" means the outcomes or findings from tests or work.

Wrong options:

  • resuts: It leaves out the "l". Write "results". Only the exact spelling gets the mark.
  • result: "result" has no "s" at the end. The speaker says "results", so write the "s".
Correct answer: outlines

Explanation: You hear "write trial outlines before the exam". You need more than one plan, so add s at the end.

Meaning: "outlines" means brief plans or main points to follow.

Wrong options:

  • outines: It leaves out the "l". The right spelling is "outlines". Every letter must be correct to get the mark.
