Leisure travel was, in a sense, a British invention. This was mainly due to economic and social factors; Britain was the first country to become fully industrialized, and industrial society offered growing numbers of people time for leisure. This, coupled with improvements in transport, especially the railways, meant that large numbers of people could get to holiday resorts in a very short time.
Modern mass tourism of a sort we can easily recognize today began in 1841 when Thomas Cook organized the first package tour, in which everything was included in the cost - travel, hotel and entertainment. To cater for the large numbers of new holiday-makers, holiday camps were established, both on the coast and in the countryside, and they became immensely popular.

Printed "mostly", the speaker says "mainly"

Explanation: On the recording the words are "was mainly due to". Both words start with the same letter, so listen to the whole word.

Printed "greater", the speaker says "growing"

Explanation: Listen again to "offered growing numbers of". They both start with 'g', so hear the end, they finish differently.

Printed "packet", the speaker says "package"

Explanation: In the audio you hear "the first package tour". Both words start the same, but the spoken word is one letter longer.

Printed "price", the speaker says "cost"

Explanation: Here the speaker says "included in the cost". The printed word starts with a different letter, so listen from the first sound.

"industrialized" matches the audio

Explanation: "become fully industrialized, and industrial society" has a long word that may look odd. The speaker says it exactly, so do not click it.

"railways" matches the audio

Explanation: The phrase "especially the railways, meant that" has a common transport word that may trick you. It is pronounced the same as printed, so do not click it.
