Relativity is one reason that mass and energy can be converted into each other, which is how nuclear power plants work and why the sun shines. Another important effect is in supernova explosions, which signal the death of massive stars. Supernovas exist because relativistic effects overcome quantum effects in the core of a sufficiently massive star, allowing it to suddenly collapse under its own weight until it becomes a much smaller and harder neutron star, Moore said. In a supernova, the outer layers of the star collapse down onto the core and create a gigantic explosion that, among other things, creates elements heavier than iron. In fact, nearly all the heavy elements we are familiar with are made in supernova. We are made of stuff created in in dispersed by supernovas, Moore said. If relativity did not exist, even the most massive stars would end their lives as white dwarfs never exploding, and we would not be around to think about it.

Printed "elated", the speaker says "effect"

Explanation: Here the speaker says "Another important effect is". Both words start with the same letter, so listen to the whole word.

Printed "Heroes", the speaker says "Supernovas"

Explanation: The speaker says "Supernovas exist because relativistic" not "Heroes". The printed word starts with a different letter, so the sound will be very different.

Printed "cramp", the speaker says "core"

Explanation: Listen for "in the core of a". The printed word ends differently.

Printed "told", the speaker says "said"

Explanation: You will hear "Moore said". The printed word begins with a different letter than the one you hear, so watch the first sound.

Printed "call", the speaker says "create"

Explanation: On the recording the words are "and create a gigantic". Both words start with the same letter, so wait for the whole word to decide.

Printed "them", the speaker says "it"

Explanation: Listen again to "to think about it". The printed word is much longer than the spoken word, so trust the short sound you hear.

"neutron" matches the audio

Explanation: "a much smaller and harder neutron star" has a scientific word. It looks technical, but the speaker says it exactly, so do not click it.

"supernova" matches the audio

Explanation: "made in supernova" might look odd as a form, and you may want to change it. The speaker says it exactly, so do not click it.
