To keep your car purring, you have to change the oil. Such maintenance produce eight billion gallons of used motor oil annually. Some waste oil does get re-refined to produce oil for lubrication or heating. And some just gets dumped. So it would be more environmentally friendly and provide fresh fuel if we could convert the old motor oil to something really valuable: new gasoline. And that's what a research team thinks they've done. They presented their work at the annual meeting of the American Chemical Society. Their approach involves pyrolysis, decomposing organic material with heat in the absence of oxygen. Pyrolysis can break down waste oil into gases, liquids, a little bit of solids. The gases and liquids can be converted into gas or diesel. But conventional pyrolysis methods don't do a great job with motor oil. The new technique mixes the oil with a material really good at absorbing microwave radiation. Tests showed that heating this mixture with microwaves was about 90 percent efficient at creating precursors to fuel—which beats tossing the oil down the drain.

Printed "boogers", the speaker says "produce"

Explanation: Listen for "Such maintenance produce eight". Click "boogers" on the page. The first letters are different, so the words do not start the same. Listen to the whole word.

Printed "clad", the speaker says "research"

Explanation: You will hear "And that's what a research team". You see "clad" in the text, but the audio says research. The words start with different letters, so listen to the beginning of the word.

Printed "freshened", the speaker says "presented"

Explanation: On the recording the words are "They presented their work". On the page it says "freshened". Both words end with the same letters, so listen to the whole word.

Printed "gentleman", the speaker says "American"

Explanation: Listen again to "the annual meeting of the American". Find "gentleman" in the printed line. The first letters are different, so listen for the start of the word.

Printed "decennial", the speaker says "material"

Explanation: In the audio you hear "decomposing organic material with". The text shows "decennial". Both words end the same, so follow the sound of the whole word.

Printed "visceral", the speaker says "conventional"

Explanation: Here the speaker says "But conventional pyrolysis methods". You will find "visceral" in the sentence. The words start with different letters and the spoken word is much longer, so listen for that length.

"oil" matches the audio

Explanation: "used motor oil annually" may catch your eye because it repeats a key idea. The speaker actually says this phrase exactly, so do not click "oil".

"microwaves" matches the audio

Explanation: "heating this mixture with microwaves was" looks technical and tricky on the page. The speaker says it exactly as printed, so do not click "microwaves".
