Ok, so you are just beginning your teacher-training course. I've been a school teacher for twenty-five years and I'm here today to highlight the qualities I believe you need to become not just a good teacher but a great teacher. In my last talk on this question, the students said that an in-depth knowledge of the subject was the most important factor. I think that's true for university professors, but it's not that high on my list for school teachers. Other people have said that a teacher should be well dressed otherwise they won't get respect. Now I'm not suggesting you should turn up to class in scruffy jeans and a T-shirt, but I don't put much emphasis on appearance. In my view, a great teacher is someone who takes time to understand each student and to value them as individuals. Everyone has different abilities and learns at a different pace, and you have to be aware of that. And another thing, all of you will spend a great deal of your working life in the classroom with your students but a great teacher also knows they are a member of a wider professional team. So a great teacher is someone who is as prepared to ask for help from colleagues as they are to give it.

Option 1: "They are willing to cooperate with other members of staff."

Explanation: The speaker emphasizes that a great teacher is part of a wider professional team and should be prepared to ask for help from colleagues. This indicates a willingness to cooperate with other staff members, aligning with the main idea of collaboration in teaching.

Option 2: "They have an expert knowledge of their subject."

Explanation: The speaker mentions that while in-depth knowledge is important for university professors, it is not a high priority for school teachers. This contradicts the option, as it suggests that expert knowledge is essential, which the speaker does not support.

Option 3: "They have a respect for their students' needs."

Explanation: The speaker highlights the importance of understanding each student and valuing them as individuals, which directly relates to respecting their needs. This aligns with the main idea that great teachers recognize and adapt to the diverse abilities and learning paces of their students.

Option 4: "They pay a great deal of attention to their appearance."

Explanation: The speaker states that while appearance matters to some extent, they do not place much emphasis on it. This indicates that paying great attention to appearance is not a quality of a great teacher, making this option incorrect.

Option 5: "They have many years' experience in teaching."

Explanation: The speaker does not mention years of experience as a necessary quality for great teachers. Instead, they focus on understanding students and collaboration, making this option irrelevant to the qualities discussed.
