Paragraph list

Like many insects, termites display a fixed lifecycle in which they live underground, fly and lay eggs at different stages of their existence.
After this, the termites will land and lose their wings.
Once out in the open air, mating takes place as they fly in swarms, usually for about 40 minutes.
As they mature beneath the soil, they develop wings in preparation for the time when they will emerge from their colony.
These wingless termites will then go on to become kings and queens of newly established colonies.

First sentence: Why this is the first line? This paragraph is the first line because it introduces the main topic about termites and their lifecycle. It does not refer to any previous information and gives a broad overview of what will be discussed. This follows the rule of Topic Sentence. Why other lines are not chosen? Paragraph 2 starts with "As they mature" which uses a pronoun and needs context. Paragraph 3 starts with "Once out" which also uses a pronoun. Paragraph 4 starts with "After this" which is a transitional phrase. Paragraph 5 starts with "These wingless termites" which uses a determiner that refers back to previous information.

Concluding sentence: Why this is the last line? This paragraph is the last line because it concludes the discussion about termites. It wraps up the lifecycle by showing the final outcome of the termites becoming kings and queens. This follows the Conclusive Words rule.

Paragraph pairs:

  • Pair 1 (Paragraph 1 → Paragraph 2): Paragraph 2 connects with Paragraph 1 because it continues the idea of the lifecycle. It shows the next step in the lifecycle, which is the development of wings. This follows the Logical Order rule.
  • Pair 2 (Paragraph 2 → Paragraph 3): Paragraph 3 connects with Paragraph 2 because it describes what happens after the termites develop wings. It shows the next step when they are out in the air. This follows the Chronological Order rule.
  • Pair 3 (Paragraph 3 → Paragraph 4): Paragraph 4 connects with Paragraph 3 because it describes what happens after mating. It shows the next action of landing and losing wings. This follows the Logical Order rule.
  • Pair 4 (Paragraph 4 → Paragraph 5): Paragraph 5 connects with Paragraph 4 because it explains what happens to the termites after they lose their wings. It shows their new role as kings and queens. This follows the Cause and Effect Relationship rule.
