Paragraph list

The disparity in career progression becomes obvious further on, with a tiny proportion of women in senior positions. It is not surprising that women have rejected this industry in the face of such rampant inequality.
However, recent figures suggest an alternative explanation: five years into their careers and before starting a family, female architects and engineers receive a lower salary than their male counterparts.
Experts often blame caregivers and careers advisers for discouraging women from considering this as their industry of choice, and equally the women themselves who decide to leave it after having children.
The worst gender balance in the UK is seen in the construction and building trade. Less than I per cent of the 800,000 employees are female.
In spite of sustained efforts to improve the situation, and a lot of research, attempts to encourage more women to consider careers in construction just haven't worked.

First sentence: Why this is the first line? This paragraph is the first line because it introduces the main topic of gender balance in the construction industry. It gives a broad overview of the situation without needing any prior context. It does not use any pronouns or definite articles that refer to previous information. Why other lines are not chosen? Paragraph 2 starts with "In spite of" which is a conjunction, so it cannot be independent. Paragraph 3 starts with "Experts" which is a specific reference and needs context. Paragraph 4 starts with "However" which is also a conjunction. Paragraph 5 uses "the" which assumes prior knowledge of the topic.

Concluding sentence: Why this is the last line? This paragraph is the last line because it summarizes the main points discussed in the text. It reflects on the overall theme of gender inequality in the industry and shows the final outcome of the discussion.

Paragraph pairs:

  • Pair 1 (Paragraph 1 → Paragraph 2): Paragraph 2 follows Paragraph 1 logically because it continues the discussion about the gender balance. It shows that despite efforts to improve the situation, the problem still exists. This is a cause and effect relationship.
  • Pair 2 (Paragraph 2 → Paragraph 3): Paragraph 3 connects with Paragraph 2 because it explains why the efforts have not worked. It discusses the blame on caregivers and advisers, which is a logical continuation of the topic.
  • Pair 3 (Paragraph 3 → Paragraph 4): Paragraph 4 follows Paragraph 3 because it provides an alternative explanation for the issues discussed. It shows a different angle on why women may leave the industry, which is a broader to specific strategy.
  • Pair 4 (Paragraph 4 → Paragraph 5): Paragraph 5 concludes the discussion by showing the outcome of the issues raised in Paragraph 4. It highlights the disparity in career progression, which is a logical order from explanation to conclusion.
