Practice Listening: Select Missing Word ID: #4224 Short Fit
Instructions ›
You will hear a recording. At the end of the recording the last word or group of words has been replaced by a beep. Select the correct option to complete the recording.
You’ve heard about survival of the fittest. But with global pressure on the environment, could humans be influencing a new kind of evolution: survival of the prettiest? Here’s an example - a penguin expert at the University of Washington analyzed over 300 penguin pictures in coffee table books. The goal was to see if some of the 17 penguin species appeared far more often than others. And indeed, they did, in all the books. After eliminating possible bias in pictures that also featured humans or pretty views, the favored penguins were those with red, orange or intense yellow markings. That includes emperors, the stars of the movie March of the Penguins. The research also noted that human preferences for various species have nothing to do with intelligent conservation. Even the ugliest penguin is far ahead of the almost countless reptiles and slimy invertebrates that make up well more of the earth’s population. Think about it - how much have you heard about endangered sea slugs, salamanders, snails and spiders? Chances are they’re not - the featured subjects of your favorite coffee table books either.

Option 3: "the featured subjects of your favorite coffee table books either"

Explanation: This option correctly completes the sentence by reiterating the text's point that less attractive species, such as sea slugs and spiders, are not commonly featured in coffee table books. It aligns with the main idea that human preferences skew towards visually appealing species, thus supporting the argument presented in the text.

Option 1: "endangered at all"

Explanation: This option suggests that endangered species are not present in the context of the text. However, the text discusses how certain penguin species are favored in coffee table books, while also mentioning that even the ugliest penguins are more prominent than many other less attractive species. Therefore, this option does not accurately reflect the text's focus on visibility rather than endangerment.

Option 2: "the real stars of 'March of the Penguins'"

Explanation: While the text mentions that emperors are the stars of the movie 'March of the Penguins,' this option does not complete the sentence in a way that aligns with the overall theme of the text. The focus is on the visibility of various species in coffee table books, not specifically on the movie's stars.

Option 4: "interested in successfully eliminating the possible bias against them"

Explanation: This option implies an active interest in eliminating bias, which is not supported by the text. The text discusses the presence of bias in the selection of species for coffee table books but does not suggest that there is an effort to eliminate this bias. Therefore, this option does not fit the context.
