Practice Listening: Select Missing Word ID: #4243 Medium New Orleans
Instructions ›
You will hear a recording. At the end of the recording the last word or group of words has been replaced by a beep. Select the correct option to complete the recording.
Now, I live in New Orleans, and I am in love with New Orleans. My soul is always soothed by the giant live oak trees, shading lovers, drunks and dreamers for hundreds of years, and I trust a city that always makes way for music. I feel like every time someone sneezes, New Orleans has a parade. The city has some of the most beautiful architecture in the world, but it also has one of the highest amounts of abandoned properties in America. I live near this house, and I thought about how I could make it a nicer space for my neighborhood, and I also thought about something that changed my life forever. In 2009, I lost someone I loved very much. Her name was Joan, and she was a mother to me. And her death was sudden and unexpected. And I thought about death a lot. And, this made me feel deep gratitude for the time I've had. And, brought clarity to the things that are meaningful to my life now. But I struggle to maintain this perspective in my daily life. I feel like it's easy to get caught up in the day-to-day, and - forget what really matters to you.

Option 1: "forget what really matters to you"

Explanation: This option directly reflects the author's sentiment expressed in the text about the struggle to maintain perspective on what is truly important in life. The phrase 'forget what really matters to you' aligns with the author's admission of getting caught up in daily life, which is a central theme of the passage.

Option 2: "trust a city"

Explanation: While the author does express a sense of trust in the city of New Orleans, this phrase does not relate to the main idea of the sentence about maintaining perspective on life. It is a separate thought that does not complete the context of the struggle mentioned in the text.

Option 3: "live near a house"

Explanation: This option refers to a specific detail in the text about the author's living situation but does not connect to the overarching theme of the passage regarding the importance of perspective and what matters in life. It is too narrow and does not address the emotional context.

Option 4: "participate in a parade"

Explanation: Although the text mentions parades in New Orleans, this option does not relate to the author's reflections on life and gratitude. It introduces an unrelated activity that does not fit the context of the sentence about remembering what is important.
