Practice Listening: Multiple Choice, Single Answer ID: #3994 Medium Moon
Instructions ›
Listen to the recording and answer the multiple-choice question by selecting the correct response. Only one response is correct.
So, firstly, the far side of the Moon is what we call the dark side of the Moon, but it's not dark, it just when it rotates this far side of the Moon is facing towards the Earth but we are facing away from it. So we never see the far side of the Moon but it does get sunlight. But because it's always essentially pointing away, for the most part, from the Earth, it means it's a radio quiet place, it's the quietest place, we think, in the nearby universe because the loudest place in the nearby universe is the Earth. And the other side of the Moon, the side of the Moon that we see, is blocking it. So one of the ambitions is to test is this a great place to put radio facilities, because there are projects that have been designed to put a large radio telescope on the far side of the Moon. So the Moon acts as this giant, big shield. Now, for communicating data that means you can do ultralow frequencies, which is actually more efficient for transmitting data. Anything related to radio astronomy, understanding the gas in our Milky Way, all the way to the first stars, we always want the most radio quiet place. That's why Australia has always been an expert in radio astronomy. The only better place pretty much is not on this Earth, it's the back side of the Moon.

What do the speakers say about ultra low frequencies?

Option 3: "They are highly efficient for transmitting data"

Explanation: This option is correct because the text explicitly states that ultra low frequencies are more efficient for transmitting data. This aligns with the main idea that the far side of the Moon provides an optimal environment for radio astronomy and data communication.

Option 1: "They can only be created on far side of the Moon"

Explanation: This option is incorrect because the text does not state that ultra low frequencies can only be created on the far side of the Moon. Instead, it mentions that the far side is a suitable place for radio facilities due to its quietness, but it does not limit the creation of ultra low frequencies to that location.

Option 2: "They get interrupted by sunlight"

Explanation: This option is incorrect as the text does not mention that ultra low frequencies are interrupted by sunlight. In fact, the text implies that the far side of the Moon receives sunlight, but this does not affect the efficiency of ultra low frequencies for data transmission.

Option 4: "They are essentially pointing away from earth"

Explanation: This option is incorrect because it misinterprets the context. The text discusses the far side of the Moon pointing away from Earth, but it does not relate this to ultra low frequencies. Instead, it focuses on the advantages of the far side for radio astronomy, not the directional aspect of the frequencies themselves.
