IELTS Practice Reading: Choose Multiple Answers ID: #56363 Medium Learning through ‘doing
Instructions ›
Choose THREE correct options for the following.
Tap any word for its meaning

Modern education attaches great importance to learning through doing. It is fully recognized that the knowledge gained through actually doing the task is more effective and lasting than that gained through mere reading. That is why all the modern methods of education give top priority to some hand-work round which they base the teaching of the curriculum.

Three R’s replaced

In the past, whereas education laid stress on training of three R’s i.e. Reading, Writing and Arithmetic, modern education attaches great importance to the training of three H’s i.e. Head, Heart and Hand. It has been realized that the head, the heart and the hand get the best training through self-activity with hands and brain, especially when carried out in cooperation with others. Mere reading of books or listening to others does not help much in this direction.

Participation, not listening

In modern education, the student is not merely a passive listener but is an active participant in the process of education. In the past, it was the teacher who did most of the talking. Now it is the student who is expected to be more active and up and doing and the teacher is merely a guide. For the healthy development of the mind, it is most essential that the student should be an active giver and not merely a passive receiver. It is this activity of the mind which will lead to emotional integration, so necessary for a healthy personality. If the child is merely a recipient, all the time listening to his teachers, his own personality gets dwarfed because the teachers’ personalities dominate over his personality.

Question Focus: Main idea question - key feature of modern education

Correct Answer: C

Why this is correct: This is correct because the passage clearly says modern education focuses on learning through doing and self-activity. That is exactly what activity based training means. This is a Synonym match.

Passage Reference: Modern education attaches great importance to learning through doing. It is fully recognized that the knowledge gained through actually doing the task is more effective and lasting than that gained through mere reading. That is why all the modern methods of education give top priority to some hand-work round which they base the teaching of the curriculum. Three R's replaced In the past, whereas education laid stress on training of three R's i.e. Reading, Writing and Arithmetic, modern education attaches great importance to the training of three H's i.e. Head, Heart and Hand. It has been realized that the head, the heart and the hand get the best training through self-activity with hands and brain, especially when carried out in cooperation with others. Paraphrasing: Passage: 'learning through doing' = Option: 'activity based training'

Tips: Look for repeated ideas. If the writer repeats it, it is important.

Key Vocabulary:

  • self-activity = learning by doing yourself

Question Focus: Detail question - checking if a compulsory craft is stated

Correct Answer: A

Passage Reference: That is why all the modern methods of education give top priority to some hand-work round which they base the teaching of the curriculum.

Why this is correct: This statement is not supported. The passage talks about hand-work being important, but it never says that a basic craft is compulsory. This is adding a rule that the writer does not mention. This is a Not Given trap.

Tips: Do not assume rules like compulsory unless the passage clearly says so.

Key Vocabulary:

  • curriculum = subjects taught in a course

Question Focus: Detail question - checking strength of claim

Correct Answer: B

Passage Reference: It is fully recognized that the knowledge gained through actually doing the task is more effective and lasting than that gained through mere reading.

Why this is correct: Students may choose this because the passage says knowledge is lasting. However, permanent is a much stronger word. The passage does not say the knowledge lasts forever. This is a Qualification trap.

Paraphrasing: Passage: 'lasting' = Option: 'permanent'

Tips: Be careful with strong words like permanent, always, never.

Key Vocabulary:

  • lasting = continues for a long time

Question Focus: Detail question - role of the teacher

Correct Answer: D

Passage Reference: Now it is the student who is expected to be more active and up and doing and the teacher is merely a guide.

Why this is correct: This is correct because the passage directly says the teacher is merely a guide, which means a supportive or facilitating role. This is a clear Synonym match.

Paraphrasing: Passage: 'merely a guide' = Option: 'supportive/facilitating role'

Tips: When the passage uses clear definitions, trust them.

Key Vocabulary:

  • guide = someone who helps rather than controls

Question Focus: Inference question - effect on personality development

Correct Answer: E

Passage Reference: For the healthy development of the mind, it is most essential that the student should be an active giver and not merely a passive receiver. It is this activity of the mind which will lead to emotional integration, so necessary for a healthy personality. If the child is merely a recipient, all the time listening to his teachers, his own personality gets dwarfed because the teachers' personalities dominate over his personality.

Why this is correct: This is correct because the passage explains that being active helps develop a healthy personality, while passive listening harms it. This clearly supports the idea of better personality development. This is an Inference question.

Paraphrasing: Passage: 'healthy personality' = Option: 'development of distinctive personality'

Tips: For inference questions, connect ideas instead of looking for exact words.

Key Vocabulary:

  • dwarfed = made weak or small

General Tips:

  • Multiple answer questions need careful checking. Count how many answers you must choose.
  • Only Matching Features jump around. MCQ answers follow passage order.
  • Watch out for strong words like permanent, compulsory, always.
  • Do not use real world knowledge. Use only what the passage says.
